Damaged
Sides

The sides of containers are frequently damaged during handling and use.  This damage may be no more serious than a dented side or a loose wire, but it can cause serious problems if the intended load won't fit in the container because of the dent or if an employee receives a cut due to a loose wire.  Damage to the sides is often inexpensive to fix; this repair can represent a wise investment in safety.

Examples of some common types of side damage are shown in the following photos:

Side Wires are Broken and Bent
BENT/BROKEN WIRES
 Wires are Cleanly Broken
     MISSING WIRES

Metal Side of Tote Box Has a Cut or Tear in it.

TORN METAL SIDE

The photo at the top left shows a very common type of damage -- usually caused by the forks on a forklift truck.  How difficult it is to repair depends a great deal on the extent of the damage.  However, in most cases the damaged area can be economically repaired.

The photo at the top right shows side wires which have broken cleanly.  It may not be necessary to repair this damage if the wire ends are smooth and do not pose a safety hazard.  However, if the container holds parts which are small enough to escape through the opening, repairs may  be warranted.

The photo at the bottom shows a small tear in the side of a tote box ("tub").  This tear was caused by the fork on a forklift.  Although the defect appears to be minor, repairing it is probably a good idea because of the possibility  that the sharp edges of the tear could cut a person's hand, leg, or other body part.
